标题: Woman accused of trying to cut off husband's penis

内容:

A 69-year-old Palm Springs woman was accused of attempting to cut off her husband’s penis with a pair of large scissors this weekend. Her effort failed, although the husband was treated for a non-life-threatening wound in the genital area and released from a local hospital, police said.

Virginia Valdez was charged with mayhem, assault with a deadly weapon and felony domestic violence in the alleged attack Saturday evening, according to Palm Springs police. She was released Sunday on $100,000 bond and faces a court hearing next month, they said.

Palm Springs Police Sgt. Kyle Stjerne said the couple had been married for 32 years and the cause of Saturday’s fight at their home in the 1700 block of Rochelle Road remains under investigation.

“It was just a long-standing marital dispute, and we are not sure what caused her to do it,” he said.

The 62-year-old husband’s name was not released.

Police recovered the scissors and will retain them as evidence. Stjerne described the scissors as resembling poultry shears. “They were more heavy duty than the standard office scissors,” he said.

标题: Lancaster prison inmate's death was homicide, officials suspect

内容:

The death of a male inmate at the state prison in Lancaster on Sunday is being investigated as a homicide, and his cellmate is the main suspect, authorities said.

The dead man was serving a sentence for a second-degree robbery committed in Los Angeles County.

Terry Thornton, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, said the suspect passed a note toguards at breakfast time saying his cellmate appeared to be dead. Guards found the dead man in his bunk, under the blanket, and emergency efforts to revive him were unsuccessful, Thornton said.

Coroner officials noticed something suspicious on the body that led them to consider the death a homicide.

Authorities were not releasing details about the evidence nor the names of the dead man or his cellmate until their preliminary investigation is complete.

TheLos Angeles County Sheriff’s Department sent homicide detectives to the scene to assist state prison officials.

The suspect is being held in single-person cell until we see how the investigation progresses, Thornton said.

This death is the fourth suspected homicide in the state prison system since early October, she added.

标题: Irvine to award bonuses of $100 to $500 to all city workers

内容:

A divided City Council has approved $450,000 in bonuses for city employees.

The council awarded $500 to each full-time employee, $250 to part-time employees who work more than 10 hours a week and $100 to part-timers who work less than 10 hours a week.

Its not a lot of money, but it says to every employee, We recognize that weve been through a tough time together, Councilman Larry Agran said. It is not a bonus; it is recognition of the tough times, the harder work, the smarter work, that has allowed us to restore ourselves to a position of being whole.

Councilmen Jeffrey Lalloway and Steven Choi voted against the bonuses.

It is very difficult to sit in front of our city employees and to object to that type of recommendation as a bonus compensation a good job well done, Choi said at the Tuesday meeting. But for me, Id rather be more cautious than celebrating with the temporary surplus.

That surplus is the not-yet-allocated $454,691 of a nearly $14.4-million surplus detailed in the general fund year-end report, according to the Daily Pilot.

The unexpected funds came in part from a 15% increase in sales tax revenue and a 14% increase in hotel tax revenue, according to a staff presentation.

标题: Arson suspected in two Pasadena fires

内容:

Arson is suspected in two fires that ignited moments apart at a house and in vegetation along the westbound 210 Freeway in Pasadena, a spokeswoman said Sunday.

The two-story houseat 384 N. Oakland Ave. sustained significant damage Saturday afternoon and is likely to be a total loss, with$700,000damage to the structure and $100,000 to its contents, said Fire Department spokeswoman Lisa Derderian.

Preliminary investigation pointed to arson as the cause of the fire becausea second suspicious blaze occurred across the street along the freeway right-of-wayshortly after the house fire started, Derderian said.

Three adults were home at the time the fire was reported at 2:15 p.m. Saturday and all escaped safely, Derderian said. Thirty residents of a apartment building next door were evacuated briefly as a precaution, she said, and one unit of the complex sustained water damage.

Firefighters were able to contain the house fire in about 20 minutes, but the freeway vegetation fire flared on and off for much of the afternoon, Derderian said.

A firefighter fell and injured his wrist while working to put out the house fire and was taken to Huntington Memorial Hospital for treatment, Derderian said.

The heavy smoke from the right-of-way fire snarled traffic along the 210 near the Fair Oaks Avenue exit, she said.

内容:

A Glendale florist and his wife pleaded no contest Thursday to multiple charges of identity theft after they were accused of stealing financial information from customers who shopped at their Glenoaks Boulevard shop, officials said.

Vahik Ghookasian and his wife, Hilda, both 60, had originally pleaded not guilty to 14 felony counts of identity theft, but changed their plea in Burbank Superior Court. A no-contest plea is the equivalent of a guilty plea in criminal court, but cannot be used as evidence of liability in a civil trial.

A sentencing date has yet to be scheduled, according to the Glendale News-Press.

The couple were arrested Nov. 17 at their hillside home after detectives discovered several fraudulent charges made to customers’ bank accounts, police said.

Two Glendale residents reported that bogus charges had been made from Oct. 6 to Oct. 22 after they shopped at the couple’s store, Daisy Florist.

标题: Brooke Mueller faces cocaine, assault charges in Aspen

内容:

Aspen, Colo., police found cocaine in the possession of Brooke Mueller, the ex-wife of Charlie Sheen, when she was arrested for allegedly assaulting a woman at a local bar.

She was booked on assault and drug charges and released on $11,000 bail.

Mueller, 34, was arrested early Saturday after a woman at an Aspen bar known as the Belly Up told officers that the onetime real estate investor had assaulted her, according to a report by the Aspen Police Department. The officers arrested Mueller at another bar a short while later, the report said.

Mueller was also charged with possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, according to the report.

According to Fox 31 Denver, the incident began when Aspen police were making a routine check of the bar. The alleged victim approached the officers and told them she had been assaulted by Mueller, the station said.

Mueller and Sheen had a tumultuous relationship and custody battle for their twin sons, with incidents that have been well documented by the entertainment media.

Sheen was arrested in Aspen on Christmas morning in 2009 for allegedly beating Mueller, whom he married in 2008. She was his third wife and was reported to be legally drunk at the time she made the 911 call to Aspen police.

Mueller has entered drug rehabilitation for cocaine use. Sheen filed for divorce from Mueller in February. Both are required to pass drug tests as part of their renegotiated custody agreement, according to media reports.

标题: Pentagon Papers still causing controversy 40 years on (in China)

内容:

REPORTING FROM BEIJING -- A play about the struggle between a free press and government is one thing. A discussion about that play is yet another order of magnitude, as the producers of L.A. Theatre Works Top Secret: The Battle for the Pentagon Papers discovered this weekend in Beijing.

Midway through a performance Friday night at the prestigious Peking University, producer Alison Friedman received a text message informing her that a talk after the performance would be canceled for fear of unforeseen consequences.

Friedman had little choice but to oblige. I suppose we could have tried to push and play dumb and have them running onstage, grabbing our mikes, she said. But I just announced it was canceled and we went on our merry way.

Actually, the biggest surprise was that the Chinese government, not what you would call a notable supporter of free speech, had actually agreed to stage a play about the U.S. governments deception concerning the Vietnam War and the U.S. medias courtroom battles in 1971 to publish a top-secret Pentagon study of the war.

It speaks very well of China that they have embraced this tour. That is the real story, said Top Secret playwright Geoffrey Cowan, former dean of USC’s Annenberg School of Communications and Journalism and president of the Annenberg Foundation Trust at Sunnylands.

标题: Mexico's President Calderon says drug cartels threaten democracy

内容:

REPORTING FROM MEXICO CITY -- President Felipe Calderon acknowledged Sunday that despite five years of battling drug cartels, criminals today pose an open threat to Mexicos democratic order (link in Spanish).

In a candid speech marking the start of his sixth and last year in the presidency (link in Spanish), Calderon said interference in elections by drug gangs is a new fact, a worrisome fact. It is a threat to everyone, he said.

He was apparently alluding to last months local elections in Michoacan, Calderons home state, where traffickers and their henchmen intimidated voters andtold people whom to vote for. Those events have led to fears about further meddling in Julys presidential vote.

Calderon defended his decision to deploy the military to fight the cartels and scolded political forces that dont have the vision to support the struggle.

This is a problem, friends, that has been developing for decades and that is showing us its true face, a face of violence, a face of evil, Calderon said. Violence and insecurity, he added, are one of the greatest challenges Mexico has faced in modern history.

Since Calderon tookoffice in December 2006, more than 40,000 people have been killed in fighting with and among drug gangs, and thousands of Mexicans have gone missing or been forced to flee hometowns.

标题: Russia's ruling party under 50% in early election results

内容:

REPORTING FROM MOSCOW -- Russia’s ruling party appeared to have lost significant support among voters and was at risk of seeing its commanding majority in the lower house of parliament evaporate, according to exit polls and initial ballot counts in elections held Sunday.

With 51% of the ballots counted, the United Russia Party of Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and President Dmitry Medvedev was leading its rivals with about 49% of the vote, far below the 64% it won in 2007 parliamentary elections. The Communist Party trailed with almost 20% of the vote, followed by the Just Russia and nationalist Liberal Democratic parties, each with just under 13%.

Exit polls cited by Russian television also suggested that United Russia would receive less than 50% of the vote.

If the voting totals hold up, the results would be a stinging defeat for Putin, who has announced plans to run for president in elections early next year. He held the post for two terms ending in 2008, when election laws forced him to step aside in favor of Medvedev, his hand-picked successor.

标题: South Korea police probe possible election fraud

内容:

REPORTING FROM SEOUL -- Probing political chicanery reminiscent of some banana republic nation (or perhaps the state of Florida circa 2000) South Korean authorities are investigating a case of alleged election fraud that appears to be designed to keep a ruling-party candidate in office.

Police say that an aide to a lawmaker for the nations Grand National Party organized a widespread cyber attack to confuse voters trying to get to the polls on election day in late October.

The aide, who is in custody, reportedly hired three Internet technology workers to cause computer breakdowns on a website designed to help voters find their polling stations.

Last month, Seoul residents elected a new mayor in a race that analysts called a crucial run-up to next years presidential elections. Analysts predicted that low turnout would be an advantage to the ruling partys candidate.

Many South Koreans expressed shock over the apparent attempt by the ruling party to influence a crucial election.

The ruling-party lawmaker, Choi Ku-sik, has denied any knowledge of the scheme.

Some say the suspect is my aide, but he worked as my chauffeur for one year and three months and not in my office, Choi said at a news conference Friday. If the investigation reveals that I am part of this crime, I will immediately resign from my seat. I feel I have been struck by lightning under a clear sky.

In recent months, minority-party candidates have made strides in their attempts to defeat Grand National Party candidates, buttressed by growing support from younger voters weary of the ruling partys politics.

An information website run by an election watchdog was shut down for about two hours Oct. 26 because of the cyber attacks. The Korea JoongAng Daily reported Saturday that the 27-year-old aide persuaded three men from his hometown to use 200 computers to bombard the website in order to shut it down.

Police suspect that the men waged a similar attack on a website run by Park Won-soon, a minority-party candidate and eventual winner of the Seoul mayoral race. It was unclear if that website was shut down by the attacks. The three IT workers are in police custody.

An angry opposition party member called the ruling party the incubator of foul play and corruption.

标题: Russians vote amid signs ruling party's dominance is slipping

内容:

REPORTING FROM MOSCOW — Russians went to the polls Sunday to choose lawmakers amid accusations of election fraud and signs that the ruling United Russia faction could see its overwhelming majority in parliament shrink or even disappear.

Polls before the election showed the faction of Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and President Dmitry Medvedev would receive 53% of the vote, which would cause it to lose ground in the 450-member lower house of parliament, where until now it held 315 seats.

On Sunday, exit polls cited by Russian state television showed United Russia with less than 50% of the vote, but it was not immediately clear how reliable the figures were. Even if the party receives less than 50% of the overall vote, it could still win a majority of seats.

Initial results were expected early Monday.

Putin, who has already signaled that he will run for president next year, voted at a polling station in downtown Moscow and predicted “a good result for United Russia.”

Yuri Gudkov, a lawmaker and member of the Just Russia party, accused the Kremlin of voting fraud and ballot stuffing. Former allies, Just Russia and United Russia are now bitter opponents.

“Today we caught red-handed a deputy head of a Moscow polling station in an attempt to stuff 42 ballot papers all marked in favor of United Russia,” he said. “At another station we discovered a whole ballot box filled with pro-United Russia ballots ahead of the voting.”

Lead, ultrafine particles and other aircraft emissions at Santa Monica Airport could pose health risks for residents in the surrounding neighborhoods, scientists said Wednesday evening at a hearing in West Los Angeles.

The studies are highly disturbing, said state Sen. Ted Lieu (D-Torrance), chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Air Quality. Lieu said emissions could be exposing Westside residents, especially children, to potentially dramatic health effects, including lower IQs, asthma and bronchitis.

A standing-room-only crowd of about 120 Westside residents attended the hearing at the Felicia Mahood senior center, where researchers presented results from studies at or near LAX and Santa Monica Airport. The scientists included a medical doctor and researchers from UCLA, as well as representatives of the federal Environmental Protection Agency, the South Coast Air Quality Management District and the Los Angeles Unified School District.

Westside residents testified about their worries over noise and pollution. Laura Silagi of Venice spoke of hearing the constant roar and drone of planes.

标题: Egypt's young Facebook revolutionaries fail to inspire voters

内容:

REPORTING FROM CAIRO -- The young revolutionaries who plugged into social media to ignite a revolution that brought down Hosni Mubarak failed to excite voters and fared poorly in Egypts first round of parliamentary elections, according to officials results released Sunday.

Hampered by political naivete, egos and lack of funding, the young activists were overwhelmed at the polls by better organized Islamists. The multiphase elections, which end in January, have so far indicated that activists have been unable to turn the passion they inspired last winter in Tahrir Square into political capital, winning only a fraction of the more than 8 million votes cast last week.

Young revolutionaries have struggled with political inexperience at some points, and suffered from lack of funds and organization at others, said Imad Gad, a political analyst with Al Ahram Center for Political and Strategic Studies. This didn’t enable them to reach voters or carry out strong campaigns like those of the Muslim Brotherhood or the Egyptian Bloc.

Islamists, represented by the Muslim Brotherhoods Freedom and Justice Party and the ultraconservative Salafis of Al Nour Party, dominated the vote. Official figures reported by the state news agency MENAshowed that the FJP won 3.5 million votes, followed by Al Nour with 2.3 million. The secular Egyptian Bloc finished with 1.29 million. The Wafd Party and the relatively moderate Islamic party Al Wasat finished with fewer than 1 millionvoterseach.

The youngrevolutionaries coalition, known as the Continuing Revolution, won no more than 336,000 votes in the elections first stage, which covered nine of the countrys 27 governorates.

标题: Syria faces Arab League deadline to allow monitors

内容:

REPORTING FROM BEIRUT — Syria indicated Sunday that it might be willing to allow Arab monitors into the country after the Arab League threatened to tighten sanctions against President Bashar Assad’s increasingly isolated regime and to seek the help of the United Nations to end a violent crackdown against dissent.

Arab foreign ministers have given Syria until Sunday to sign their proposal for the observer mission, part of a league-negotiated plan agreed to by Syria last month to end the bloodshed. Syrian officials, who have ignored numerous previous deadlines, maintain they are committed to the plan, but have concerns about how the monitors would operate.

Messages are being exchanged between Syria and the Arab League to reach a certain vision that would facilitate the mission of observers in Syria, while preserving Syrian interests and sovereignty, Syrian Foreign Ministry spokesman Jihad Makdissi told reporters in Damascus, according to the Associated Press.

Qatars foreign minister, Sheik Hamad bin Jassim al Thani, said Syria had sent the league a number of requests for clarification, which had been answered.

We asked the Syrian foreign minister to come tomorrow and sign the paper in the event of their consent. And we are awaiting an answer from them,” Jassim told reporters Saturday in Doha, the Qatari capital.

He reiterated that failure to sign the protocol could lead to U.N. involvement, but did not elaborate.

标题: Kobo Vox tablet review

内容:

The Kobo Vox tablet feels like a missed opportunity.

Over the last year, the scrappy Canadian e-reading company has released the impressive Kobo Touch eInk eReader and polished its Kobo Reading Life apps into worthy rivals to Amazon's Kindle apps and Barnes & Noble's Nook apps on tablets and smart phones.

The company is in the process of being purchased by Japan's equivalent to Amazon, the massive online retailer Rakuten. Despite Kobo's largest U.S. retail partner, Borders, closing its doors, it seemed that Kobo was akin to a promising, aspiring prizefighter on the brink of being ready to challenge the heavyweight champs of e-reading, Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

And then I used the Vox -- Kobo's answer to Amazon's Kindle Fire and Barnes & Noble's one-two punch of the Nook Color and Nook Tablet.

With the Vox, Kobo has taken a step back, delivering a product that doesn't come close to its rivals and one that doesn't match up to the quality I expected given how much I like the Kobo Touch and Kobo reading apps on Google's Android and Apple's iOS devices.

On paper, the Vox looked like a smart move, selling for $199.99 and featuring a seven-inch touch-screen with eight gigabytes of built-in storage -- that's the same included storage and price as the Fire and the same as the Nook Color (the Nook Tablet sells for $249). Just as the Nook Color and Nook Tablet do, the Vox features with a MicroSD card slot, which can accommodate a card of up to 32-gigabytes in size, if you don't mind buying one.

Like the Fire and the Nook, the Vox runs a modified version of the Android Gingerbread operating system, designed by Google with phones, not tablets in mind.

But unlike those two others, Kobo has only made minimal changes to Gingerbread, most noticeably pinning reading-related functions to the bottom of the Vox's Android home screens.

I was hopeful Kobo would deliver a competitive product, but instead I found myself disappointed at just about every turn in using the Vox.

The hardware, from the outside, isn't bad looking. The back of the Vox is great to hold on to, with Kobo's signature quilted pattern rendered in a soft and grippy plastic. On the review unit I tested, a light-blue rim of plastic sat between the back of the Kobo and its 1020 x 600 pixel resolution display.

It's nice to see a company take a bit of risk design-wise, especially when compared with the boring looks of the Kindle Fire. The Vox is also offered with lime-green, pink and black rims.

But once I turned on the device, it was mostly downhill.

The Vox starts up slow, and I failed to ever reach the seven-hour battery life Kobo claims for the Vox. I usually got about four or five hours of battery life, but there were about four times in my week of testing that the device would shut itself off when falling below an 80% charge (a couple of those delays struck when we were shooting the above video).

When the Vox was up and running, it did so sluggishly. Loading apps, menus, Web pages; checking email; opening e-books; turning pages in e-books -- everything took place slowly. It felt as though the Vox was always a step, or a second or two, behind my touch input. The display also fails to match the clarity, brightness, color range or viewing angles of the Fire and the Nook Tablet.

Snappy, speedy, responsive -- these are not words I would use to describe the Vox. Too often I found myself staring at a rotating gray circle waiting for something to load. This complaint can partly be attributed to lower-end internal specs, such as an 800-megahertz processor and 512-megabytes of RAM, but if tuned enough with the right software, such hardware shouldn't be so slow.

Kobo has a solid selection of books available for sale, more than 2.3 million titles. Major new releases are often available at a price that meets or beats those of Amazon or Barnes & Noble. But unlike Amazon and Barnes & Noble, Kobo has no app store -- instead directing users to purchase apps from the independent online app store GetJar.

Like Barnes & Noble, but very much unlike Amazon, Kobo has no storefront for music, movies or TV shows, either.

Although I like the hardware of the Nook Color and Nook Table, and I like the software and Web services of the Fire, I can't say that I'm happy with either the hardware or software offered by the Vox. At the same price as the Fire and the Nook Color, the Vox seems overpriced and more in line with tablets that sold for about $130 to $150 a year ago.

I wanted to like the Vox, but I didn't. Instead, the Vox feels like a prototype, not a fully finished product ready for the masses. And that left me flatly disappointed.

标题: Seeking to copy -- legally-- from Blu-ray discs and online media

内容:

One of the criticisms of the digital locks used by broadcasters and Hollywood studios is that, in trying to squelch piracy, they can interfere with fair uses of copyrighted material by other artists. And under federal law, its illegal to circumvent those locks. Chicago-based Kartemquin Films (the subject of the video at top) and other documentary filmmakers won a temporary exemption from that law a year and a half ago, with the help of students at the USC Intellectual Property and Technology Law Clinic and lawyers from Donaldson & Callif of Beverly Hills. Now the clinic and the firm are seeking to extend the exemption to all filmmakers and authors of multimedia e-books.

The 1998 Digital Millennium Copyright Act made it illegal to circumvent technical protection measures on DVDs and other digital media. That created a dilemma for filmmakers who wanted to use a snippet from an earlier movie on DVD: Even if the use wasnt infringing, they could still be sued for going around the locks. So even though circumvention tools are widely available online (despite the fact that theyre illegal to make or distribute), filmmakers used them at their peril.

Thats why documentarians sought an exemption from the Copyright Office in 2009. Recognizing the potentially chilling effects of the anti-circumvention provision, lawmakers had included in the 1998 law a requirement that the office consider granting relief every three years to those whose non-infringing uses were adversely affected. The exemption documentarians won in July 2010 applies only to DVDs, and it expires next year.

In seeking a new exemption, the filmmakers are focused on two problems, said Jack Lerner, a law professor at USC who directs the Intellectual Property and Technology Law Clinic.

San Clemente has advanced to only its second championship game in football since the school opened in 1964, and the Tritons have quite a weapon in 5-foot-9 senior Christian Tober.

The receiver-defensive back had three touchdowns last week in the Pac-5 semifinals against Tesoro, scoring on receptions of 80 and 73 yards and on a 75-yard kickoff return. He also has made at least six kick blocks this season on special teams.

Tober is probably our best all-around player, Coach Jon Hamro said. Hes been amazing.

San Clemente (12-1), which faces Santa Margarita on Saturday in the Pac-5 final at Angel Stadium, has a huge offensive line similar to Santa Margarita. So you can say the game will be won in the trenches _ unless Tober gets loose.

标题: 'Dexter' recap: The false prophet

内容:

Oh brother (Sam). As I’ve read other recaps over the past several weeks, I’ve sensed that I’ve been more positive than most critics have regarding this season of “Dexter.” But I’m going to have to put down my pompoms right about here. Tonight’s episode just felt messy compared with the best Dexter’s been, slack where it should have been taut and ridiculous when previously I’ve been willing to go along for the ride.

Picking up from last week, Dexter finds Popsicle Gellar. Then ensues some of the clunkiest, most redundant exposition I’ve ever seen on this show. “Travis! You killed Gellar!” Dexter says unnecessarily. Then, Travis and Gellar have a “conversation” that fills us in with all the subtlety of a jackhammer. “You killed me, Travis,” Gellar says. “Then you stuck me in the freezer.” “I have to stop him,” Dexter says, in case we weren’t sure what exactly he’d plan on doing next.

I liked the angle that Dexter wants to kill Travis as much for personal revenge as to catch a criminal, but his methods of throwing off the police (using a disembodied hand to put prints on Travis’ sword) and trying to trap Travis (by posting on Gellar’s blog) just struck me as tremendous time-wasters. What happened to Dexter the ruthless tracker and killer? These seemed more like Scooby-Doo type traps.

One problem was obvious from the beginning -- the show started at 6:45 p.m. If you wanted to catch Nickelodeon’s experiment in boy-band media synergy, Big Time Rush, and the end of Gaga’s set, you were in your chair for 4 1/2 hours. That kind of stage commitment would wear out Springsteen, plus KIIS devoted way too much time to inane DJ yakking with cable-TV celebrities.

标题: Patrice O'Neal: A new album and a marathon of memories

内容:

This post has been corrected, as indicated below. Patrice ONeal

No one could imitate Patrice ONeal, Gregg Opie Hughes of The Opie & Anthony Show said ahead of a marathon satellite-radio weekend memorial for the late stand-up comic. Fortunately for fans, ONeal himself was set to release new material, the sale of which will benefit the mother, sister, wife and child who survive him.

Patrice was working on a CD, getting ready to release, everything was complete, the Sirius XM host said Friday. This is something he wanted out there.

Veteran New York-based comic ONeal, who suffered a stroke on Oct. 19, died Tuesday. He was 41.

The show was the first to play Hate People Touching Me, a new ONeal clip, which will air throughout the weekend as part ofa marathon tribute broadcast by Opie, Anthony and Jim Norton, and other comedy folks, as they celebrate ONeals life and work on the Opie & Anthony Channel, XM 105/Sirius 206.

The upcoming album Mr. P, unlike other posthumous releases that might be cobbled together from partially complete work, is Patrices CD that he was proud of, Opie said, talking about the album in the wake of the Thursday visit from ONeal manager Jonathan Brandstein. Recorded in April at the Improv in Washington, D.C., the album has a February release date, according to LaughSpin.

The family gets the money and trust me, without getting into it, he said, they need the money. Anyone who wants to help can simply ... order the CD.

Opie predicted ONeal would be a massive star posthumously, saying it was too bad he didnt get to that next level of fame before he died.

标题: Brooke Mueller, Charlie Sheen's ex-wife, arrested for assault

内容:

Brooke Mueller, ex-wife of actor, Hollywood bad boy and self-described winner Charlie Sheen, has been arrested and accused of assaulting a woman in a bar in Aspen, Colo.

No further details on the alleged incident were available.

Mueller has gone into well-publicized drug rehabilitation for cocaine use. Sheen filed for divorce from Mueller in February. Both are required to pass drug tests as part of their renegotiated custody agreement, according to media reports.

Sheen himself went into drug rehabilitation at his home, which he dubbed the Sober Valley Lodge, just before erratic public behavior got him fired from the CBS sitcom Two and a Half Men earlier this year.

It was unclear who had custody of their sons, Bob and Max, at the time Mueller was arrested.

标题: Live review: Iggy, Stooges stay in attack mode

内容:

Back on his feet, the wild man punches out proto-punk classicsat the Palladium.

It says everything about Iggy Pop that in an age of wireless technology he still opts for a microphone with a cord. The choice led to some serious inconveniences Thursday night at the Hollywood Palladium, where Iggy & the Stooges played the first show of a brief West Coast tour.

The 64-year-old frontman was shadowed by a cable wrangler whose job was to collect the slack created every time Iggy Pop dived into the audience; it fell to this guy, too, to prevent the cord from tripping up the 100 or so fans who joined the Stooges onstage during “Shake Appeal.” (“Occupy Hollywood!” Iggy Pop had shouted by way of instruction.) Are roadies entitled to hazard pay? The cable wrangler, his shirt tucked business-mindedly into his jeans, made a strong argument for it.

Iggy Pops use of the tether didnt signal any kind of old-school chauvinism; it wasnt wrapped up in ideas about the superior sound of vintage equipment. The singer works this way because he understands his role as an essentially theatrical one, and he knows that theater requires conflict.

So there was the microphone, straining against (but somehow never breaking free from) whatever it was plugged into. And there were Iggy Pops pants, inching down (but somehow never slipping off) his ropy, parenthesis-shaped form. And, of course, there was the Stooges music, which for 72 minutes kept threatening to veer off-course and collapse into a heap of riff and beat. It never did.

内容:

Reggae history doubles back on itself on Jimmy Cliffs new EP, which opens with a cover of “The Guns of Brixton,” the Clash tune that name-checks Cliffs 1972 movie “The Harder They Come.” Whats more, the EP was produced by Tim Armstrong of Rancid, a devoted Clash acolyte whose own Jamaican leanings speak to Cliffs influence on punks from successive generations; after “The Guns of Brixton,” Cliff, 63, does Rancids “Ruby Soho,” reanimating Armstrongs memory of “echoes of reggae coming through my bedroom walls.”

Plenty of older artists have taken up with young inheritors lately — think of Loretta Lynn and Jack White, or Betty Wright and the Roots. “Sacred Fire,” though, feels especially busy with cultural-historical cross talk; its always reminding you that Jimmy Cliff was there first.

标题: Pop music review: KCRW's 'Are Friends Eclectic?'

内容:

The FM station’s annual holiday show indeed featured a wide range of entertaining acts, but there were a few stylistic gaps.

Are friends eclectic?

Yes. The answer to the question posed in the title of KCRW’s holiday show is a definite, though qualified, affirmative. The 10 artists crammed into five hours at the Orpheum Theatre on Saturday night included a young Malaysian folksinger (Zee Avi), a historic reggae crooner (Jimmy Cliff) and a flamenco-blues guitar heroine (Anna Calvi).

You’d expect to find a few bad apples in such a mixed bag. But even those acts relegated to playing short acoustic sets in front of the curtain while full bands plugged in behind played as if their careers hinged on it. After all, as several musicians acknowledged onstage, KCRW-FM (89.9) has a history of breaking new acts.

It feels like ‘The Gong Show,’ singer-guitarist Barbara Gruska joked as she and her four bandmates in the Belle Brigade lined up before the scrim. The awkward setting did not stop the young L.A.-based country-rock group from singing and playing their hearts out. Gruska’s strong tones anchored her brother Ethan’s sweet strains as they toasted the virtues of being uncool in a rendition of Losers that seemed like the night’s breakout, take-away moment. Until there came another, and another, and another.

标题: Music review: Premiere of Shostakovich's long-lost 'Orango'

内容:

The fragment of Shostakovich’s 1932 satiric opera, “Orango,” given its world premiere by the Los Angeles Philharmonic on Friday night in Walt Disney Concert Hall, came like a bolt out of the blue.

But that is only in the sense that the work, which had been intended as a celebration of the 15th anniversary of the Soviet revolution, was so little known. Even the composer’s widow, Irina Shostakovich, who attended the Disney premiere, only learned of “Orango” when a musicologist discovered a sketch of its prologue in a Russian archive in 2004.

As conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen, staged by Peter Sellars and orchestrated by Gerard McBurney, the premiere, in fact, was no bolt out of the blue at all. Shostakovich, who feverishly wrote a half-hour of music (probably in only a couple of days before breaking off the project), began it with the overture from another satiric theater work, his ballet “The Bolt.” After intermission, Salonen and the L.A. Phil gave a gripping performance of what is perhaps Shostakovich’s most unsettling major work, his Fourth Symphony, which was written shortly after “Orango,” to help explain where this massively convulsive symphony comes from.

标题: The gift of Gaga

内容:

Amid the torrent of images of her alter ego in elaborate makeup and futuristic fashions, the stripped-bare face of Stefani Joanne Angelina seems startling.

The Grammy award -winning singer has teamed up with outré photographer Terry Richardson for a book of photographs, “Lady Gaga X Terry Richardson” “(Grand Central Publishing, $50), a showcase of more than 350 color and black-and-white photos taken on a nearly yearlong global odyssey.

Richardson, known for his risqué, clothing-optional style, captured all sides of the chameleon-like popstar, commencing with the 2010 Lollapalooza festival, continuing to her unforgettable egg-encased arrival at the 2011 Grammys and on through to the final show of her Monster Ball tour.

It’s a not-for-kids picture book with a sententious foreword by Gaga. The rest is pure, unadulterated visual dialogue. Fans won’t be disappointed with extreme behind-the-scenes and concert shots of the expected snarls and outlandish get-ups. Included are images of Gaga’s its-whats-for-dinner meat dress and her poses with Cher, the godmother of attention-grabbing,barely-there Vegas showgirl couture. But most revealing are the black-and-white images with no fuss, no props or theatrical makeup in the way. It’s when the singer takes a moment from the madness, pulls back her hair and ditches the costumes, that we see the real girl who is the mastermind behind the monster.

标题: The Dry Garden: Now that the high winds have departed...

内容:

After the storm, we have no coroners, no priests for big trees. There will no autopsies, no last rites for the shredded jacaranda and more than 50 damaged trees at the Los Angeles County Arboretum & Botanic Garden in Arcadia, the fallen oaks of Fair Oaks Avenue or mangled magnolia trees of Orange Grove Boulevard in Pasadena. Ceremony, if it can be called that, will involve gas-fired buzz saws and insurance adjusters.

So how do we mark what happened? For that matter, what did happen? And what, ultimately, will we make of the night the trees fell?

After the transformers began explodingabout 9 p.m. Wednesday, casting what at first looked like dry lightning, the storm was largely heard but not seen. This was wind that didn’t so much howl as rumble, subside, then return madder, like a drunk not quite finished busting up a bar. One woman I heard on the news kept saying, “It sounded like a train.” It did. A drunk train out for an accident.

To Midwesterners familiar with tornadoes, or Gulf Coasters for whom hurricanes are so common they have a season, downed trees and flying deck chairs are nothing new. We call this a disaster? They have a point. The Facebook account of a friend noted that her brother missed being crushed by two eucalyptuses that fell on her guest house only because he got up to go to the bathroom. Thats typical of the near-miss stories circulating.

Which brings us to the bottom line. There were mass casualties of trees. My friend’s brother lived. The eucalyptuses didn’t. We lived, and our urban canopy took the beating for us. My next door neighbor to the south lost three trees. His worker was out at dawn cutting up the trunk of what was a 75-foot-tall liquidambar. Asked if he was all right, he looked up blearily and said, “I’m from Georgia. This doesn’t happen in Georgia.”

内容:

It was Woods first victory since the Australian Masters on Nov. 15, 2009, a duration that included 26 official tournaments. Less than two weeks later, Woods crashed his car on Thanksgiving night outside his Florida home amid revelations of extramarital affairs.

After being tied at seven under through the first nine holes, Woods gained a two-shot advantage with birdies at the 10th and 11th holes.

But Woods gave one back on the par-three 12th hole when he pulled a six-iron shot into a bunker and finished with a bogey four.

Johnson pulled even with Woods again with a 10-foot birdie putt at No. 13 as Woods missed a similar putt for birdie and settled for par.

Johnson made another birdie at the 16th hole, and Woods tied him again with a birdie on the par-three 17th to set up the dramatic finish.

Paul Casey, who ballooned to a first-round 79, rebounded to finish in third place at five under after shooting 69 on Sunday.

Matt Kuchar and Hunter Mahan finished tied for fourth at four under.

标题: Curiosity for Rent: Snow White cottages in Silver Lake

内容:

When Sylvia Helfert considered buying eight storybook cottages in 1976, her friends said she was crazy to spend so much money on old pieces of junk. Newly divorced in her 50s and pressed for cash, Helfert gambled and offered $140,000 for the 1931 Silver Lake property that Roque & Mark Real Estate had listed for $160,000.

“In five minutes they accepted,” said Helfert, 91, a longtime Marina del Rey resident. “It was the first thing I ever owned by myself.”

Turn the historic pages of Los Angeles’ storybook style architecture and you’ll discover -- appropriately enough -- stories. Here are a few behind Helfert’s property in the 2900 block of Griffith Park Boulevard, designed by Ben Sherwood and called the Snow White cottages or the Seven Dwarfs cottages by locals:

1. Storybook roofs can be insured (sometimes).

True to the storybook style, which weaves a fairy tale spell over Tudor and French Normandy architecture, the roofs of Helfert’s buildings looked like they were built by drunken elves. “I couldn’t get anyone to insure the buildings because the roofs looked like they’re falling apart,” said Helfert, the property’s third owner. “Safeco refused me, but then I got a call from their president. He apologized.” The executive explained that as a boy living nearby, he watched workers break the shingles, singe the edges and place them in a random pattern, Helfert said. The insurance executive said the roofs were in excellent condition, so Helfert could get a policy after all.

标题: The Global Garden: A drought-tolerant tree called moringa

内容:

Moringa seems too good to be true: a fast-growing, drought-tolerant tree whose leaves, flowers, pods and seeds are not only edible but also highly nutritious. Called malongay by some gardeners, the plant (botanical name Moringa oleifera) has more potassium than bananas, more protein than sardines, more beta carotene than carrots. Seed cake, the residue after oil is extracted, can be used for water purification. Some also believe that moringa may help to control hypertension, keep glucose levels in check, fight bacteria and parasites and reduce inflammation. The seeds can have a Viagra-like effect, according to some. More important to gardeners (well, most gardeners), moringa is a nitrogen-fixer in the soil.

Pete Pableo, left, a member of the Salad Bowl Community Garden in Granada Hills, introduced me to the plant last summer. Pableo is from the Philippines, where the leaf is a staple, and he keeps his crop of moringa cut low to the ground, harvesting the fingernail-sized leaves regularly.

“You use it with chicken or soup,” he said. “Just the leaf. You have to use a lot, because the leaves are so small.”

In terms of taste, think spinach with a pleasing nuttiness, subtle yet distinctive, especially when added raw to a salad. In India, where the plant originated in the Himalayan foothills, the trees also are grown for their long seed pods, the “drumsticks” that give it the common name drumstick tree. You can eat the young pods like asparagus or green beans, pictured at top, or you can slice them for stew or curry.

标题: Lady Gaga's 'Marry the Night' video: five delicious moments

内容:

Lady Gaga has an early holiday present for her little monsters: a music video to accompany her new track Marry the Night.

In the Ministrys time-honored tradition, were bringing you our highlights of the video, which you can watch in all its 14 minutes of glory below.

A distinct 80s vibe permeates the usual arty Gaga fare; from color scheme to wardrobe (with a shout out to the sweet black Trans-Am the Lady grinds all over), theres a Whos That Girl situation happening. We do not fear any Gaga-Madonna comparison, so take it to comments if you have a beef.

While the choreography leans toward what weve come to expect — brisk movement but nothing exact or exciting on, say, a Beyoncé level — she more than makes up for in narrative.

Our favorite bits include ...

The procedure: The video starts with a tableau in what we can only imagine is the most depressing Berlin womens clinic ever, where Gaga is undergoing some kind of procedure accompanied by her own voice-over. Its a bit unpleasant to watch, but registers brave in a music category thats usually full of Katy Perrys candy shtick or Rihannas blatant bath house romping.

The silver lining: Even in her darkest hours, Gaga turns to the whimsy of her work for an injection of optimism. While being wheeled on a gurney by two nurses to some cruel fate, Gaga turns her frown upside down by saying, For example, those nurses? Theyre wearing next season Calvin Klein. So am I. It really is the little things.

标题: Ben Stiller, Warren Beatty, others toasted at saucy, sincere Britannia Awards

内容:

Movie stars are shuttled to so many glamorous red-carpet events during awards season it can be a challenge to remember the significance of each boozy get-together.

Just ask Ben Stiller. On Wednesday night at the Britannia Awards in Beverly Hills, the actor was honored by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, whose Los Angeles branch gave him the Charlie Chaplin award for excellence in comedy. He was one of five entertainment world fixtures to receive prizes at the ceremony, which also feted Warren Beatty, Helena Bonham Carter, Pixar chief John Lasseter and director David Yates.

Stiller -- who was introduced by his “Tropic Thunder” costar Robert Downey Jr. -- spent most of his acceptance speech making jabs at BAFTA and its relative obscurity stateside. When he heard he’d won a prize from the organization, he joked, he wondered if BAFTA stood for “Black Astronauts Flight Training Association.”

“Then they told me, ‘Ben, it’s an awards show, and it’s going to be broadcast on the TV Guide Channel,’” he said, meaning to refer to the TV Guide Network, which will televise the ceremony on Sunday. “And I said, ‘Say no more. You had me at broadcast. You really had me at TV Guide Channel. I’ve been looking to break into half the TV screen for a long time.’”

Though the Britannias are held by BAFTA, they honor performers and executives from any country -- just so long “as they can speak English like a normal person,” kidded the evening’s emcee, Alan Cumming.

The event, held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, had a casual vibe, with both presenters and honorees interspersing their speeches with expletives. Helen Mirren, who gave Bonham Carter the prize for British artist of the year, called her the goddess of “couldn’t give a -dom” before complimenting her outlandish fashion sense and bird’s nest hairstyle.

But others were more earnest on stage, like Yates -- who received a special video message from absent “Harry Potter” stars Emma Watson, Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint.
